The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is a national examination that students in Tanzania take at the end of their primary school education, typically after completing Standard 7 (the final year of primary school).

The PSLE which is also known as Standard Seven Examination is administered by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA).

The Examination Calendar and Timetable

Eligibility to Sit for the Standard Seven Examination – PSLE

The eligibility criteria for candidates who sit for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) in Tanzania are established by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA).

To be eligible to sit for the PSLE, candidates must Completion of Primary Education, and also must be officially registered with a recognized primary school in Tanzania.

Examined Subjects

The examined subjects at PSLE are:

  1. Kiswahili,
  2. Hisabati (Mathematics),
  3. Sayansi na Teknolojia (Science and Technology),
  4. English Language,
  5. Uraia na Maadili (Civic and Moral Education), and
  6. Maarifa ya Jamii na Stadi za Kazi (Social Studies and Vocational Skills).

The objectives of PSLE

The objectives of PSLE are :

  • to assess learners’ skills and knowledge gained in the different subjects at primary school level;
  • to assess learners understanding of the basic skills and abilities in reading, writing and arithmetic and the extent that they can use such skills in solving pertinent problems in life; and
  • identify learners with the capacity to continue with secondary education and other training institutions.
