Geography Form One TIE Book ( is written for Form One students in the United Republic of Tanzania. It is prepared by the 2005 Geography Syllabus for Ordinary Secondary Education Form I-IV, as issued by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.

What is Geography?

Geography” can be defined as the study of the interrelationship between human beings and the environment over time and space. Geography helps us to understand the relationship between human activities and the environment. The word environment refers to the world and its surroundings where people, plants, and animals live.

The word “geography” comes from two Greek words “geo” which means “The earth”, and “graphien” or “grapho” which means “to draw”, “describe” or “write”. The two words formed the word “geographien” which was later accepted into the English language as “Geography”. Therefore, Geography is the science that describes the earth. It started as a study concerned with the simple description of the earth in words, using maps and statistics. The description involved both the physical earth and everything found in
it such as plants, animals, people, and water bodies.
